Welcome to our Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) information pages. We hope you will find out about a variety of ways in which we are able to support your child to reach their own full potential, enabling a successful transition into adult life.
At West Bretton Junior and Infant School, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive school and strive to support all children ‘to be the best that they can be’, regardless of their level of need. We ensure that pupils are included in all aspects of learning and school life throughout our school. We adhere to Wakefield LA’s admissions policy that we do not discriminate against any child.
Quality first teaching is fundamental and we ensure that we provide a curriculum that is appropriate to the needs and abilities of all our children; ensuring that each child is able to reach for the highest level of personal achievement.
All pupils follow the National Curriculum at a level and a pace that is appropriate to their abilities. When it is felt appropriate, modifications to the curriculum may be implemented and additional support is provided. Individualised intervention programs, working and conversing with outside agencies and engaging in regular contact with the families of children with SEND are at the heart of our goal in ensuring all children are able to access their learning.
In our setting, successful inclusion results in:
- every pupil feeling safe, confident and happy at school
- every pupil making the best progress possible whilst also enjoying their time at at school - be that in lessons, during their play or lunchtimes, or when involved in any of our extended school activities
- every child's belief in themselves as a learner and valued member of our school community.
Successful inclusive provision at West Bretton is seen as the responsibility of the whole school community, permeating all aspects of school life and applicable to all our pupils.

Wakefield Parent Carer forum - reasonable adjustments - what are they and why are they needed
We work hard to develop good relationships with all our families and look forward to working closely together with you, to ensure that your child can flourish.
At our school, class teachers are responsible for the learning and progress of every child in their class, including those with special, educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Because they work with your child every day, class teachers know them best and are usually the first people to speak to if you have any concerns. Our SENDCo is here to provide extra guidance, expertise and to help coordinate support, but your child's class teacher remains closely involved in their day-to-day learning and development.
If your child is having SEND Support in school, we follow the Wakefield Graduated Approach of Assess, Plan, Do, Review and will invite you into school each term to attend a Planning Discussion with the class teacher. During these meetings, together we will assess what is working well for your child and plan the next steps needed to support them in their learning.
You will be invited into school to attend a SEND Consultation meeting with your child's Class Teacher every term (at least 3 times a year). During this meeting your child's Monitoring or Support Plan will be shared with you so that you can contribute your ideas towards their plan. Your child's Targets will be shared with you, so that you know what they are working towards in their lessons and together you can plan the next steps in their learning journey.
Frequently Asked Questions (SEND Support at Our School)
Who should I talk to if I am worried about my child's learning or development?
Your child's class teacher is always the first point of contact. They see your child every day, so they know their strengths and challenges best.
What does the SENDCo do?
Our SENDCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) supports teachers and families by offering specialist advice, coordinating extra help and working with outside professionals when needed.
Will the SENDCo work directly with my child?
The SENDCo may work with your child but their main role is to make sure the right support is in place and that teachers have the strategies they need to help your child succeed.
How will I be kept informed?
Your child's teacher will keep you updated on progress and support in place. The SENDCo may also meet with you , especially if your child is receiving additional provision or has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
What if I still have concerns after speaking to the teacher?
If you feel your concerns haven't been resolved, you can then arrange to meet with the SENDCO, who will be happy to talk things through in more detail.
